Brow Lamination: What to Know

Matisse’s latest service is a very exciting, yet very misunderstood service. You may have heard of it referred to as a “brow perm” and images of curly 80s hair fill your brain. “Is this stuff going to make my brows curly?” is a frequently asked question by curious clients. So let's actually explain what a brow lamination is, what it does, how it's done, and how to care for your newly laminated brows. And… for the record, no, it does not make your eyebrows curly.

What is a Brow Lamination

A brow lamination is a semi-permanent service that sets the eyebrows into the desired shape. This effect lasts anywhere from 6-8 weeks eliminating the need for any product needed to lock in a brows shape. The products used are very similar to perms, which is where the comparisons come from.

How is it Done?

The brows are thoroughly cleaned to remove any makeup residue, brushed, and trimmed to the desired shape, then a small amount of adhesive is applied to keep them in that shape throughout the duration of the service. The first step relaxes the brow hairs and binds them to the desired shape and the second neutralizes. A conditioner is then applied to the brows to give them back moisture and nutrients that may have been lost in the lamination process. The final step is a tint that fills in the brows and can provide a more robust color to those with paler brows. For people with thick, coarse brows this can be a useful tool for taming and shaping your brows. On the flip side, those with finer, sparse brows can use brow lamination to add lift and volume.

How to Take Care of Your Lamination

Just like the hair on your head when you get it treated, post lamination brows also require aftercare. As anyone who lived through the 80s will tell you, do not get a perm wet for the 24 hours after the service, and this goes for brow lamination too. This includes showers, saunas, baths, or any activity with excess moisture. You also will not want to apply any makeup to the brows or sleep on your front for those first 24 hours. After that time frame, you can resume your normal daily routine. Beyond those steps, you want to use a brow conditioner daily to help with the longevity of the brows and take care to not excessively rub or touch your brows. And that's it! We look forward to seeing you in the salon for your lamination!
